The Poet

“Put something silly in the world that ain’t been there before.”
— Shel Silverstein

It happened the day I opened A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein. Not when I was a child, but as an adult — even if only by age. The book had followed me for many years, I kept seeing it in the library of my elementary school, in book stores as I passed by, calling to me from the window, but I never picked it up. Turns out, it was waiting for me to be ready. From the moment I read the first words, the way they play with each other and with their ideas, I was hooked on poetry. After reading as much as I could find, it was time to start writing.

I’m a Poet and I Know It

I now have a stack of poems to revise, many more to write, and a few published. I was even shortlisted for The Caterpillar Poetry Prize, an international and highly regarded children’s magazine.

In order to develop this love of poetry in others, strengthen my writing, and get a chance to know the themes and topics that would resonate, I developed the I’m a Poet and I Know It Poetry Workshop — designed to ignite the spark of poetry in children and educators alike. A chance to see the process from blank paper to finished poem, to understand techniques and terms, as well as learn why I love to write, and get a chance to write something for themselves.
